Black History Month
February is Black History Month – a good time to recognize just some of the things we take for granted every day that were invented by black people:
Air conditioning
Blood bank
Carbon-filament light bulb
Cell phone
Clothes dryer
Doorknob
Elevator
Fire escape ladder
Fire extinguisher
First open heart surgery
Fitted sheet
Folding chair
Fountain pen
Gas mask
Golf tee
Guitar
Hairbrush
Horseshoe
Internal combustion engine
Ironing board
Key chain
Lawn mower
Lock
Mailbox
Peanut butter
Pencil sharpener
Potato chips
Printing press
Railroad switch
Refrigerator
Rotary engine
Scaffolding
Spark plug
Spring seat for cars
Stethoscope
Street sweeper
Traffic light
Typewriter
I had no idea either. We should all recognize these things and hold great respect for the ones who invented the things we could not do without today. How could we go without the use of any of those things especially the most important ones like spark plugs and traffic lights…
Oh and I loved your poem Sue. Very well said 😉 😀
Thanks for your acknowledgment Rhonda! 🙂 Not feeling too good, gonna hit the sack early tonight before another long day at work.
Have a great week my friend!!
Sue
I like this.
Yeah, black people as well as those of other races have created everything we have today.
A poem I wrote back in 1993 and copy written.
Color me a rainbow
No favorite color first
Promise me they all will glow
with radiance to burst.
To see them all as equal
and LOVE them all the same,
to never again ridicule
or hide their heads in shame.
Yes, Color me a rainbow
in a brotherhood of man
lift your voices high now
and together,
All my love to my African American brothers and sisters!!

Sue your poem is beautiful! Thank you for sharing it with us, and I give you props for writing it in sonnet form, It can be a very tricky way to write a poem.
Very nice job!
Thanks Josh! 🙂 You sound like you know a bit about poetry. Do you write too?
I do write some poetry. I like the process of it 🙂
Wow, I had no idea. Great post, Jenny.
Jenny? Did you check out Sandra Lee like I told ya?
I recorded it to watch this week – I’ll report back.
I watched the show and it was visually well done but not as healthy as I expected. But this is coming from someone who cooks mostly from scratch and avoids packaged foods. By the title, I expected to see shorts cuts but her recipes are not really easy to do – but they sure look pretty. I liked her kitchen!
Oh Jenny in case you didn’t know Sandra Lee is the girlfriend of Gov. Andrew Coumo.
