Me: Rattlesnakes… Her: Robins
I am reposting these photos from my sister in Canada that I started back in April because she just sent some new amazing pictures. I just found my second baby rattlesnake in the backyard and she has a family of robins in her kitchen window! If this is a bit of sibling rivalry… she wins. 🙂
(april 11th) Something really amazing happened at my sister Liz’s house in Canada. They had very cold weather this spring and I got this email from her on April 10th: “The robins have been back for quite a while, but frost doesn’t do anything for worms. But the birds are persistent. I was on the phone when I noticed a head bobbing on my kitchen window ledge. I always open my window in the spring and summer, even fall. But this year…not yet. Well, robins have started building a nest right where I open the window. Not over to the side, but right at the bottom right corner, over my sink where I am every day. When I start opening the window screen, I will be watching the blue eggs and then little chicks. If they don’t move on, I’ll take pics while the whole process is taking place. Like you did with the hummingbirds.” The next day, she sent me her first picture…

“She’s baaack! She was gone for days. I thought she flew the coop. She’s skittish…”

“Oowee mama! Now we’re talkin’ Not a lot of time between launch and landing, so far. I always thought it took longer to lay an egg.”

“What a difference a day makes, only 4 little birdies. (Guess that tune.) I’m afraid they are gonna fall out.”

“It is SO cold and there’s no room at the inn! When they hear me coming, they all crouch down, so you should see them when they’re all trying out their wings. There are faces and eyes and definitely a pecking order!”

“That big one on the right is one of the babies! I think it’s leaving.”

“I need a shrink!! What do I do now? One by one they flew the coop, big and strong and healthy. I wish I could have put tags on them because I’ll always be wondering……are you one of Harriet’s kids?”
Ah man,…they are all gone. All have flown away. It would’ve been cool to tag them and come across them later after they have grown to adult birds. It didn’t take long for them to fly the coop. Hopefully they will hang around their home and the person that mothered them and watched over them through the kitchen window 🙂
Robins are pretty but blue jays are handsome. This morning as I was getting into my car leaving for work a blue jay was eating cat food that I feed to the strays. If he is gonna eat right there with the cats. Might as well get myself a bird feeder, huh?…
Thanks for the great comments. The robin babies will leave the nest soon and that’ll be that. No loyalty, no family picnics, no thanks …… Typical younguns entitled and all.
Liz that is sooooo adorable!!! You should put a bird feeder somewhere on your property, maybe they will stay close to your home like Jenny’s hummingbirds. BTW, Happy Mother’s Day to you!!! I hope you and your family have a wonderful day.

Wow! Those photos of the robins are awesome, Liz. They are huge and about to come out of that nest. Jenny, if I remember it correctly your hummingbird babies were slow in their progress of growing and flying away. These birds don’t waste anytime it seems 🙂
Okay Liz you win this time and congrats to ya, but come on Jenny try topping that. You have all the live and wild animals in your backyard. Oh and I’m sorry you are having a bad time with snakes this early. Just be careful when you are outside. You seem to be the type that likes to explore with a camera and I’m just saying. After the alligator lizard photo being that close at your feet. You make me nervous. You are a daredevil 😉 😀
LOL!…it’s funny 😆 I was only seeing 2 eggs in the nest and 4 birdies after hatching were in the nest and it kinda threw me into a bit confusion…lol…until I starting looking at the dates of each picture…
Liz please keep us posted!! This is good news!!! I love good news! And JJ, I really hope that baby’s daddy/momma comes home and takes care of her responsibilities!! If not, they can always apply for OBAMA money. (what a joke!) GET A JOB! LAZY PEOPLE!!!!!!! 😉 but the birds, I hope nature does the right thing for the robins and the hummingbirds.

Every year in the springtime I put up hanging plants on my balcony. This one year I put them out a little early and the Robins started building a nest in one of the plants you know? So the nice guy that I am I would sit and watch and they would fly off for more material for the nest and come back and work on it so this one time they flew off I went out and switched the plants on the hooks and they came back and they started freaking out. I thought it was so funny to watch. Ha Ha.

Aw that’s great Liz. I can tell you are excited…oowee mama!…lol…I would be excited too. You get to see it first hand just like Jenny did with the hummingbirds last year. I’m hoping Jenny that your Momma hummingbird shows up to care for those 2 eggs you have. If she does we could be in for a double featured bird show featuring Jenny’s Hummingbirds and Liz’s Robins. How cool is that? I agree, awesome! 🙂
