Iguana trumps Lizard
I once thought that my Alligator Lizard confrontation was the most harrowing thing to happen but no so, my friends. My housekeeper came to work this morning with her camera-phone. “Guess what was in my front yard yesterday?” she said. “An iguana.” Of course I assumed she meant a lizard that LOOKED like an iguana, after all my lizard looked like a rattlesnake to me. Then she produced evidence (I couldn’t take the photo off her phone) but this was definitely an iguana – a big one. The neighbor told her he saw one in her palm tree the day before but then he drinks a lot, so she wasn’t sure. Then yesterday she was gardening and “HELLO!” There it was. She said she almost fell over. “Corri y grite,” she said. She ran and screamed. Anyway, her cousin came over and took it away. Her iguana trumps my lizard for sure. What’s next? A bear? Oh right, there are bears going into local trash cans. Coyotes? Been there. Bobcat? Done that. Mountain lion? Just down the street. Yes, Beverly Hills is paradise.
Oh wow Jenny. You had another lizard roaming around. I think lizards like the tropics. Not really sure. I think they like your yard with plants, flowers and trees. I know you take good care of your yard and they just make it their home as well…
It’s funny ever since I found the page I linked you to with the alligator lizard, I found myself going to it and reading about them. I find it interesting. Have you read any of the info on lizards?…
Just so you know. I read lastnight that lizards fight off and scare snakes away. I would rather have a lizard lerking around instead of a snake anyday…
Take care,
Rhonda
I may have to challenge you on lizards lording over snakes. Last year in the back yard I watched a rattlesnake regurgitate a lizard. The lizard came out whole. And dead. I have photos but they’re pretty gross.
Oh gosh, a challenge. I guess I’m up for a challenge, because I had to show you what I found in what I said. It’s only fair for you to show your side. I do believe you though…
Link me to the picture if you want to show it and I’ll take a look. I dont want you to just throw pictures out there and others who dont care to see it, sees it… Rattlesnakes are really mean snakes. Who knows maybe an alligator lizard is just as mean and defensive…
Go about half way down the page. This alligator lizard was fighting with a black racer. Makes me wonder if it would win fighting a rattlesnake…

Look at my July 16, 2009 Diary posting – the picture is there. Maybe this lizard was the aggressor and just picked the wrong snake! :-}
I looked at the photo and remember seeing it. I forgot about it being there. Thanks for reminding me. The lizard back last year looked like an alligator lizard as well. It seems they like your yard for some reason…
I dont think they could kill a snake, but they put up a good fight it seems to scare them off. With fighting a rattlesnake, I dont think they would stand a chance. I think youre right, the lizard just messed with the wrong snake or the rattlesnake was a threat to it’s nest of eggs and she put a fight to protect her young 🙁
If you looked at the link I sent you. You will also see an alligator lizard fighting with a crow. They seem to be some tough lizards or try to be atleast…
Take care,
Rhonda
Do you live near the Clampetts??

Come ‘n listen to my story ’bout a woman who’s cute,
The poor TV host watching squirrels eat her fruit.
And then one day, she was working with a rake
And up through the ground come a rattlin’ snake.
Lizard, that is, Alligator Lizard, Texas size…
Aww, cute poem there Jenny and all so true. 2 thumbs up 🙂
